Mission East Dallas (MED) is nationally recognized for offering award-winning patient-centered healthcare. They offer medical, dental and behavioral health services to the community from their clinic and are happy to announce their expansion to an additional location, Sachse.
MED will now be able to meet the medical needs of an entire family, thanks to the new location’s focus on pediatrics. Sachse isn’t a satellite location for MED, but a fully operational clinic that offers the same services as the first location, but with additional services. Sachse also will have the benefit of board members and a proven leadership structure already built in, allowing them to hit the ground running as soon as the new clinic opens.
MED believes that with the addition of this new location, it will allow for additional health support to the community and greatly help the organization in their commitment to community health. “We don’t hire people who just care about the paycheck, we hire people who actually care about community health,” said Charles Wiltraut, CEO of MED.
Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and Nurse Practitioner (NP), Liz Juarez, will be overseeing the entire healthcare department at the Sachse location. She has been in healthcare for about 14 years and is also currently a Clinical Assistant Professor at Baylor University and teaches at clinical sites out of downtown Dallas and a medical center in Plano. From her experience, she says that follow up is a huge part of patient care. “It’s all about understanding what’s happening day to day in the patient and I’m also able to support patients once discharged,” she said.
It is this background and care that she brings to helping teach and inform other MED staff as well as helping her keep up on community health trends. “I love teaching the staff at MED so that they are successful with patients,” said Juarez. “But it’s also about educating patients. Leading doesn’t get you anywhere; empowering does!” Juarez said that everyone has an important part in taking care of patients at MED.
Also on the medical team is Dr. Christie Shanafelt. She is board certified in Family Practice having studied at the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine. “I’m passionate about caring for families within the context of their cultures and communities,” said Dr. Shanafelt. In addition to providing preventative care for patients, she engages in community-level policy changes for those that she serves. In 2011, she helped organize the Tarrant County Food Policy Council, which was created to ensure equitable access to sufficient, nutritious, and culturally appropriate foods and to advocate for local food policies that support that goal.
